  • When is crawfish season and what options are available during the off season?

The typical season for live crawfish extends from December through July. Please note that the exact start and end dates can fluctuate by one to three weeks annually, depending on environmental factors.

The peak season—the period offering the largest available crawfish and generally the lowest market prices—is typically concentrated in April and May. Similar to the general season, the timing of the peak harvest may shift by several weeks.

Outside of the live season, we proudly provide our frozen, pre-boiled crawfish, ensuring a year-round supply for our customers.

To receive the most current information regarding live crawfish availability, special promotions, and up-to-the-minute updates, we encourage you to subscribe to our email list and follow us across our social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

  • What size crawfish do you have?

This guide provides a quick reference for the size grades and their typical availability throughout the season.

    • Field Run: 18-22 crawfish per pound. Sack contains a variety of sizes, generally the best value. This size is available throughout the entirety of live crawfish season (December – July).
    • Select: 12-17 count per pound. Crawfish have been sorted for larger, more uniform sizes, which yields better meat per tail but comes at a higher price. Generally available March – June.
    • Jumbo: 12 or less crawfish per pound. Jumbo crawfish are desirable because they yield a larger piece of tail meat, making the peeling process more rewarding. Primarily available during the peak season in April and May.
  • How do I hold live crawfish?

Live crawfish are highly perishable and must be cooked on the day of delivery.

We strongly advise against storing live crawfish overnight. Attempting to hold the product overnight significantly increases the risk of mortality.

Our Guarantee Policy: Our guarantee for live crawfish is strictly limited to the date of delivery. Any crawfish held overnight is done so entirely at the customer’s risk, and no refunds will be issued for live product mortality incurred after the delivery date.

Emergency Overnight Holding Method (Not Recommended):

While we advise against holding the crawfish overnight, the following method offers the best potential for survival, though it is not guaranteed:

    1. Spray the sack down with fresh water.
    2. Place the sack into a cooler or ice chest that is equipped with a drain.
    3. Top the sack with loose ice.
    4. Crucially: Ensure the drain remains unobstructed. Dormant crawfish submerged in standing water are highly susceptible to drowning.

FINAL POLICY NOTE: NO REFUNDS WILL BE PROVIDED FOR LIVE CRAWFISH HELD OVERNIGHT.

    Video Instructions:

  • What states can you not ship live crawfish?

Due to various state regulations concerning the importation and transport of non-native species, we are currently unable to ship live crawfish to the following states:

    • Alaska
    • Hawaii
    • Illinois
    • Michigan
    • Washington
    • Wisconsin
    • Minnesota – Importation of live crawfish is prohibited. Boiled crawfish may be imported with a required, free-of-charge permit. Permits can be obtained using the direct link at /Boiled-Crawfish. Once obtained, please forward a copy to info@lacrawfish.com.
    • Oregon – Residents must obtain a Crayfish Transport Permit prior to shipment. The state assesses a fee of $14.00 per permit. The permit is valid for seven days before and after the selected date on the application. You will need to visit the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife(Opens an external site in a new window)‘s website to create an account and from there you will be able to purchase the Crayfish Transport Permit. Once the permit is purchased, please forward a copy to info@lacrawfish.com.
    • Pennsylvania – Live crawfish may only be shipped to specific commercial or institutional entities. Shipping to residential addresses is strictly prohibited.

  • What are Water Boatmen Eggs?

During the molting season, Water Boatmen (Family Corixidae) may deposit their eggs, often referred to as “nits,” on the exterior of the crawfish, particularly near the head and eye regions. This occurrence is typically observed later in the season, after the crawfish have undergone fewer molting cycles.

Rest assured, the presence of these eggs does not affect the quality, texture, or flavor of the crawfish meat. They are entirely safe for consumption. A proper, robust boil is sufficient to eliminate and sanitize the crawfish, ensuring a safe and enjoyable dining experience.

  • What do I do when my crawfish arrive?

Upon arrival, it is essential to immediately open the shipping container and follow these steps to ensure the vitality of the live crawfish:

    1. Immediate Unpacking: Remove the sack of crawfish from the container promptly upon receipt.
    2. Rinse and Chill: Gently spray the sack down with fresh water, allowing the water to drain completely.
    3. Store and Drain: Return the sack to a cooler or an ice chest equipped with a functional drain. Top the sack with loose ice.
    4. Crucial Note on Drowning: Ensure that melted ice water drains freely. Dormant crawfish submerged in standing water are highly susceptible to drowning.
    5. Preparation for Cooking: The cold temperature will induce a dormant state. Prior to cooking, lightly spray the sack down with water again to “wake” the crawfish.
  • What is the species name of our crawfish?

Procambarus Clarkii, commonly known as the Red Swamp Crawfish.

  • What is purged crawfish?

Our crawfish undergo a specialized purging process involving placement in holding tanks containing clean, highly oxygenated water for a period of 12 to 14 hours. This innovative technique facilitates the cleansing of the gills and a significant portion of the internal entrails.

Please Note: While this method enhances cleanliness, it is important to understand that it does not result in the full elimination of the digestive tract contents.

    Purging Video:

  • How much crawfish should I order per person?

We offer the following guidelines based on common dining scenarios:

    • Standard Meal: Plan for 3 pounds per person when crawfish is the primary feature of the meal.
    • Side/Appetizer: Plan for 1.5 pounds per person when crawfish is served alongside other main proteins.
    • Enthusiast Eaters: For seasoned crawfish consumers, serving sizes may increase to 5 pounds or more per person.

Note: Individual consumption rates can vary significantly based on the diner’s familiarity with the product and personal preference.

  • What if I receive dead crawfish?

We guarantee live arrival. A small amount of “dead loss” (less than 5%) is normal during transit. If your dead loss exceeds 5% of the total weight, please take clear photos of the deceased crawfish and contact us immediately upon receipt – must be day of delivery.

  9. Jared Yore (verified owner) –

I’ll be honest, I had some serious doubt that this was going to be up to my expectations… I was born and raised in Louisiana and have a pretty high bar when it comes to crawfish boils. After the hard freeze Louisiana had I was totally expecting smaller crawfish When I selected “field run”… I ordered 80 lbs to make up for it, but they came through! the size was definitely bigger than expected… AND i did all the reading and Was worried about the shipping because I did all the reading on the website and read that the protocol was to ship it the morning of, But my crawfish shipped out the evening before and actually arrived at my airport in San Diego at 8:30 PM! Southwest kept it in their cooler overnight, but I was still worried they weren’t going to make it… BUT THEY DID!!! I’m not sure what series of events Went on to make it happen, but either I’m really lucky, Or everyone at Louisiana crawfish and Southwest knew what they were doing and might have just started an Annual crawfish boil out here on the west coast… Truly, thanks again team!

  12. Thomas J. Ryan (verified owner) –

    Awesome. Thanks

  13. Michael Aziz (verified owner) –

The crawfish arrived at the appropriate time alive and well!!

  14. David Brackmann (verified owner) –

Made two orders this year for 1,500 lbs of field run. Came in great shape with a few boxes damaged on first shipment and a higher number dead. However, second shipment all good with very few dead. I would recommend that boxes be labeled “fragile – live dish” so cargo handlers at SW take better care of the cargo.

  15. Chris Robinson –

Ordered 60lbs, pick up via Southwest. Easy process, great quality. Everyone loved the finished product. Thank you, will order again.

  16. Michael Beebe (verified owner) –

Bought 60lbs and everyone enjoyed themselves and love the crawfish… can’t wait to do it again soon.

  17. Garrett Gajdusek (verified owner) –

Ordered 60lbs of live crawfish for a 4th of July boil. They were received that morning and were amazing! Definitely ordering again for next year!

  18. Lester Ayerdis (verified owner) –

I love ordering from here. We’ve been ordering crawfish from here since around 2016 when we lived in North Dakota. And have been ordering yearly since we moved to California. All our friends love it when we order them.

The only thing about this last batch, they were the dirtiest I’ve ever received. It took longer to clean, but gave me more time to drink beer! Thank y’all

  19. Craig Reams (verified owner) –

90lbs delivered on time. Very few dead bugs. Packed perfectly with ice packs still good and cold. Been ordering here for 4 yrs now with no problems. Highly recommended.

  20. Matthew (verified owner) –

These arrived super fresh and majority of them were of a great size. Easy to peel and great flavor. Made a hit at our son birthday party. Always great buying from Louisiana Crawfish Company.

  21. Jeremy Jardell (verified owner) –

It was so easy to pick up at Southwest Cargo, and saved quite a bit over shipping to doorstep. We had minimal loss and passed a real good time!!!!

  22. Brett (verified owner) –

I’ve been ordering from Louisiana Crawfish for years and the quality has always been great. My most recent order triggered my worst fear… I have 100 people coming to a boil and the crawfish may not make it! This was the result of the shipper, not the company. The company moved the shipments to a different shipper (which I suspect cost a lot more) at no expense to me, and I had my crawfish in time for the boil. Between the quality of the products and the service, Louisiana Crawfish has earned a life long customer!

  23. Tony Salah (verified owner) –

    Good crawfish

  24. Michele Cottier (verified owner) –

We had 20 people for a crawfish boil in Orlando Florida. The crawfish were amazing and the perfect size

  25. Shawn (verified owner) –

Everything was great, southwest pickup was a breeze, they arrived just as expected. They were very clean and larger than expected. Will always order from them again, great products and service!

  26. Stephanie Allen (verified owner) –

I recently moved to Ohio and I ’ve started to use Louisiana Crawfish to get crawfish here. I recently decided to try the cargo shipping option where you pick it up at the airport cargo office. I placed my order, got confirmation email but then no other information until the day before that my order has shipped with the waybill shipping number and how to track at southwest cargo. I tracked the shipment and saw it was on route and then on hand the morning it was supposed to be delivered which was great. I go to pick it up and get to the cargo office at 2:30 to find they are closed. I called every number I could find and could not get someone on the phone. The only
Hours I could find were holiday hours. Had I known or been aware of their hours closing so early in the afternoon, I would have gone eaarlier to pick it up but there was no information between La crawfish instructions and southwest cargo. We were supposed to be doing our boil Saturday evening and were very disappointed that we weren’t able to because of lack of communication about the delivery/pick up instructions. I did pick it up Sunday and talked to the employees who even confirmed their hours aren’t listed on the website. About 75% of the crawfish seemed to be alive. We boiled them Sunday but ended not being able to enjoy them with our Ohio friends who had never had crawfish. I called Louisiana crawfish Saturday and left 2 voicemails. Never got a call back from them. Would just like to warn people about this if they decide to go this option

  27. JON STAKE (verified owner) –

I order crawfish about every 2 weeks during the season and have never had a bad experience! Crawfish is always on time and the loss rate is very low considering them flying across the country.

  28. kevin butler (verified owner) –

arrived on time, alive and they cooked up sweet and tender!spring mud bugs are a tradition in my house and Louisiana Crawfish always deliver!

  29. JON STAKE (verified owner) –

We boil every 2 weeks during the season in San Diego and picking up from SW Cargo is the way to go. Not only does it save us a lot of money, the condition of the crawfish is like they just came out of the pond!! Glad you guys offer this again!!

  30. David (verified owner) –

The ladies on the phone were knowledgeable and helpful. This is the one you want!

  31. Craig Reams (verified owner) –

I was concerned when they came a day early, but had very few dead bugs. Packaged perfectly and even though they were field run, they were good sized. Party went off great and everyone had a good time. 3rd time using Louisiana Crawfish and I highly recommend them.

  32. Zackary (verified owner) –

Absolutely awesome. They Arrived in Great shape, very lively and trying to fight me til the last one.

Very few of them died, we ordered 60lbs, lost maybe %5-10 and had 20lbs extra for mid season meals. Fewer died than I’ve had buying local bags.

LA ? crawfish put them on a plane the previous day around 4pm, they arrived at my local airport around 5am, & I was there at 8 to pick them up for a noon boil. Delivered within hours of cooking ??

  33. Laura Ludwig (verified owner) –

This has become an annual tradition to do a crawfish boil for family graduations. We were happy with the quality of the crawfish received. There were a few that didn’t survive the trip to Ohio but we were given a few extra pounds in the order that well made up for the few that died along the way. Our friends are already asking when we are doing this again because the crawfish were a great.

  34. Sheri Parks (verified owner) –

I’ve been ordering from Lacrawfish for over 25 years! Their family and service are amazing, and the crawfish always arrive in spectacular condition. They really went out of their way for us when SW Cargo mistakenly charged us an extra $600 for shipping, when we had already paid. I can’t thank y’all enough for making all the calls necessary to get us our refund!!! The crawfish were big, beautiful, and delicious, as usual! You put the customers first and make us all feel like family! Thanks again!!!

  35. Randy Barnette (verified owner) –

Louisiana Crawfish Company is the absolute best company you could ever do business with. We’ve ordered with them for years for our brewery’s annual crawfish boils. Their team always assures everything is right, communicates through the whole process. Dead loss is almost ZERO, year after year.

This year, Southwest Airlines messed up and left our crawfish at a connecting airport. They would not arrive to our airport until after the freight offices closed. The LA Crawfish team started calling Southwest and assured they opened after their closing to get our crawfish to us.

  36. Steve Schmeichel (verified owner) –

Great packaging by you guys and coming in on Southwest Airlines. Crawfish were in great shape and we were really pleased

  37. Ben Wilcox (verified owner) –

Outstanding service. Less than 1% dead when purging all the way in California! Cant wait for the next boil!

  38. Wade Williams (verified owner) –

Best service for delivering live crawfish to Denver, Colorado.

  39. Sandra Gail Fazzio (verified owner) –

Received our crawfish as directed. Last time we ordered we did fedex pick up. This was much easier for us and the crawfish arrived in great shape (they did with fedex as well). We will definitely order this way again!

  40. Randal Schroeder –

Everything was as advertised. Crawfish were great. Everyone had a great time.
    Will definitely order again!!!!

  41. Robert Bosworth (verified owner) –

I wanted to show my So Cal friends and family a good bayou boil. way better mudbugs than i expected this late in the season. musta went well since i have people askin about the next boil.

  42. Dane (verified owner) –

Good size. Less the 2 % lost. Not as clean as usual, but the washer comes in handy for that

  43. Lacey (verified owner) –

Pickup was very easy from Southwest cargo. Upon arriving at home and opening the box, very few dead crawfish. I ordered 40 lbs of crawfish, Louisiana Crawfish sent 41 lbs, and I’m sure that less than 1 lb died in transit. Boiled them up and they were fantastic!

  44. Matthew Heintz (verified owner) –

I purchased two sacks to be delivered to my local Southwest Cargo. First time using this process and was apprehensive on using this method, because I was uncertain of the process. When I got my airbill ticket I got even more apprehensive as it indicated it was shipped almost a day earlier than I thought it would be sent out. I thought it would have gone out on the planes leaving New Orleans the night before delivery, however it left much sooner. I picked up my packages from local Southwest cargo on scheduled delivery day early in the morning. Southwest had them in refrigerated cold storage. I took them home and put them over ice until we started the boil which was late afternoon. To my surprise I only had about 10 dead crawfish out of two sacks. Previously, when we used FedEx delivery system I more dead crawfish for the same two sack amount. Haven been a continued customer to Louisiana Crawfish Company and will be in the future as well, but I think I found a new delivery system that works for me. Appreciate what Louisiana Crawfish Co. has been able to offer us to enjoy these delicious treats.

  45. Sharon Ladner (verified owner) –

Crawfish were in perfect condition when they arrived in San Diego. Each year when we get them, we are never disappointed!

  46. Becky Santoro (verified owner) –

Y’all never disappoint. Crawfish was outstanding. No issues or glitches, they were delivered as promised.

  47. David Brant (verified owner) –

The box was leaking, I picked them up in the morning, need more ice to keep them cold. The crawfish were decent size though.

  48. Walter Leaumont (verified owner) –

Easy order and pickup. No issues but this said “Field Run” and we definitely had some whoppers in there. Great size and quality. Not our first order and will not be our last.

  49. Natalie Landers (verified owner) –

    Very good

  50. Hank (verified owner) –

Service from La Crawfish was awesome. Called twice with dumb questions and they were patient and super helpful. Crawfish arrived in plenty of time for our boil and were all in good shape. I’ve been using this company for a large charity boil since 2006 and have ordered between 1,000 and 2,000 lbs every year in addition to numerous backyard boils. We have never been disappointed. Highly recommended.

  51. Pete Lozowski (verified owner) –

Once again great customer service by Brianna and Danny.

  52. Teri Langley (verified owner) –

Y’all never disappoint. Love your company!

  53. Mark (verified owner) –

I swear there was maybe only like 12-20 deads. They were all waving hello when I got them. Kept them properly overnight and they were still waving in the morning.

  54. Shaawn Cannon (verified owner) –

LA Crawfish is awesome! I’ve been buying crawfish from them for years and they are always easy to work with and deliver on time with very few dead crawfish. Field runs are always big so no reason to get selects. Great people!

  55. Jenn V. –

Order arrived on time as expected. Great quality and service. Been ordering from them for many years and never disappointed.

  56. Jason –

Louisiana Crawfish Company always provides the best service. My crawfish arrived on time and the packaging was in perfect shape at the air cargo pickup. I rated them a 4 because of the more than normal dead ones. It happens and is no way their fault. Overall very happy with my purchase and will buy again.

  57. Laura Dufrene –

Had 60 lbs of crawfish flown into Virginia. Put of those 60 lbs about a dozen individual crawfish were dead. We had a huge cooler of live and fresh crawfish. Cooked beautifully.

And excellent service. Had a personal phone call just to ensure thatI was satisfied when I expressed some issues with the delivery date/time. They immediately called me, we had a great conversation, and I walked away even more satisfied with my order. Will never buy anywhere else.

  58. Michael J Crochet –

I have been buying crawfish here since 2012 and they have gotten better each year. This year I had only 7 dead crawfish out of 150 pounds. Great Job Guys. Thanks

  59. Lola Pokorny –

I’ve gotten 2 orders this yr so far. There have been more dead crawfish than normal. Won’t stop me from ordering, still the best crawfish.

  60. Rebecca –
